कामचोर चमड़िया घीसु और माधव अपनी बहू बुधिया की प्रसव‑पीड़ा की परवाह न कर आलू सेंकते रहते हैं। बुधिया की मृत्यु हो जाती है। दोनों दाह‑संस्कार के लिए गाँव से पैसे माँगते हैं लेकिन उस पैसे से शराब और भोजन कर लेते हैं। वे तर्क देते हैं कि पेट भर खाना कफ़न से ज़्यादा जरूरी है.
Lazy chamars Ghisu and Madhav ignore their daughter‑in‑law Budhiya’s labour pains and roast potatoes by the fire. Budhiya dies during childbirth. The men beg for money to buy her shroud but spend it on food and alcohol instead. They rationalise that eating a good meal is better than buying a shroud.
