Animovaný film je dnes obvykle uváděn jako ucelený seriál v televizním pořadu Večerníček, přestože první filmy vznikaly samostatně. První díl z roku 1957 nesl název Jak krtek ke kalhotkám přišel, ve kterém se objevily i další postavičky jako žába, čáp, rákosník, rak, pavouci, ježek a především rostlina len. Další díly přibývaly velmi pozvolna, Krtek a autíčko (1963), Krtek a raketa (1966) a další, celkem 49 dílů. Jednotlivé díly mají délku od cca 5 min až po 29 minut (Krtek ve městě; ve snu a další 4 díly). Po velkém úspěchu animovaných filmů a večerníčků po celém světě vznikla řada dětských knih, kompaktních disků a videokazet s námětem Krtka. Zdeněk Miler údajně postavičku krtka vymyslel v roce 1954 poté, co zakopl o krtinu. Navíc krtka, jako jedno z mála zvířátek, nepoužil ve svých filmech Walt Disney, proto byla postava krtka ve své době originální. Postava krtka téměř nemluví, říká jen nemnoho slov a převážně citoslovce (hele, jé, ach jo…), která pro první díly nadabovaly Millerovy dcery. Výjimkou je první film Jak krtek ke kalhotkám přišel, který je mluvený.

Les forces du mal veulent prendre le contrôle de la Terre. Heureusement, un mystérieux ami de Dorothée intervient : c'est l'ordinateur de Corbier, une machine capable de penser et de parler suite à un malencontreux hasard provoqué par une erreur de branchement de Corbier. Se faisant appeler A.M.I. (Autonome Mémoire Informatique), il prévient Dorothée du terrible danger qui menace la Terre.

原作はフランシス・ホジソン・バーネット（バーネット夫人）の児童文学『小公女』（A Little Princess）。それまで全体にソフト路線だった「世界名作劇場」シリーズの中にあって、いじめを扱うなど異彩を放つ作品となっている。原作ではセーラが7歳でミンチン学院に入学してから、およそ6年間の話であるのに対し、10歳で入学してからの1年間程度の話になっているなど、本作品でも各キャラクターの設定やストーリーに原作との相違点が見られる。登場人物ではベッキーやラビニアの扱いが大きくなっている他、セーラの味方としてオリジナルキャラクターのピーターが配置された。登場人物の年齢差も異なり、原作ではセーラとラビニアの年齢差は6歳（本作品では3歳）、セーラとベッキーの年齢差は5歳（本作品では同い年）で、いずれもセーラよりも年上である。 本作品より、ハウス食品の単独提供となり、これに伴ってシリーズ名も前述の通り表記されるようになった。本作品では「世界名作劇場」のアバンタイトルの「ハウス食品」ロゴはテロップで別乗せしていたため（これとは別にブルーバックで提供クレジットも表示）、前述のノンスポンサー期間や系列外局での番組販売扱いの遅れ放送（ハウス食品と地元企業の複数社提供を含む）でもそのまま流用できる形になっていた。
The show featured three young sibling crime fighters, two of whom were stunt drivers and part of a secret government operation under the guise of the "Pole Position Stunt Show" that was run by their uncle. The youths inherited the role after their parents died in an unfortunate car accident. The team is equipped with two high-tech talking vehicles named "Roadie" and "Wheels." The vehicles featured numerous hidden gadgets like water skis and hover jets. The vehicles' computers themselves are portable and can be removed from the dashboards and carried around using handles, (thus they are often referred to as "the modules"). They are characters that appeared as computer-drawn faces displayed on video screens.
